The arsons attack took place near the ‘Mayor Gali’ at Sholashahar around 8am, said Panchlaish Police OC Mohiuddin Mahmud.
No injuries have been reported.
“A stone-laden truck, a van, and a car were parked by the roadside. Jamaat-Shibir activists set fire to them and fled the scene.”
Firemen later put out the fire, said OC Mohiuddin.
Regular traffic was seen on the port city streets as both public and private vehicles were out during the shutdown, police say.
Educational institutions, offices and factories were running.
Eight activists of the BNP and Jamaat were arrested from Sitakunda and Mirsarai the night before the shutdown, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Special Branch) Naimul Hasan.
Jamaat was enforcing the dawn-to-dusk shutdown to protest the execution of senior leader and war criminal Mohammad Kamaruzzaman in the Dhaka Central Jail.
