AL-favored mayors win amid allegations

18830_1CC News: Awami League backed candidates won the elections in Dhaka North, Dhaka South and Chittagong city corporations amid widespread stuffing and intimidation by ruling party men, boycott by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed candidates over allegations of rigging.

The Election Commission unofficially on Wednesday declared Annisul Huq as mayor of the Dhaka North City Corporation, Sayeed Khokon as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation and AJM Nasir Uddin as the Chittagong City Corporation mayor.

According to unofficial results of DNCC polls, Annisul Huq got 460,117 votes while BNP-supported Tabith Awal scored 325,080.

A total of 878,058 voters, out of 2,344,900, cast their votes in DNCC election. It results 37.30 percent casts of total vote. Among them, some 841,000 votes were counted as legal.

According to unofficial results of DNSC polls, another AL-favored candidate Sayeed Khokon secured 535,296 votes while Mirza Abbas got 294,291.

A total of 954,084 voters, out of 1,870,778, cast their votes in DSCC election. It results 48.40 percent casts of total votes. Among them, 865,354 votes were counted as legal.

According to unofficial results of the CCC polls, Nasir Uddin scored 475,361 votes while his nearest opponent M Manzur Alam who boycotted the poll over allegations of rigging, secured with 30,4837.

A total of 868,663 voters, out of 1,813,600, cast their votes in CCC, resulting 47.90 percent of the total vote. Among them, 821,371 votes were counted as legal.

However, BNP boycotted the city polls over the allegation of stuffing and intimidation by ruling Awami League men, of rigging and attacks on their polling agents.

BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed, on behalf of the party, announced the boycott at a press conference at its Nayapaltan central office partway through voting around 11:45am on Tuesday.

Voting, however, remains postponed in the three centers.

DNCC, DNSC and CCC chief returning officers- Shah Alam, Mihir Sarwar Morshed and Abdul Baten respectively declared the unofficial result form three different places on Wednesday.

A total of 6,029,576 voters were expected to cast vote in 2701 polling centers in the three units to elect their representatives for next five years. And a total of 48 mayor candidates were vying for the three official posts.

A total of 2,648,728 voters cast their votes in three city corporations’ elections, totaling 43.93 percent of vote cast.
